ACCC responds to Google open letter
The ACCC has taken the unusual step of responding to an open letter published by Google relating to the draft media bargaining code.
The ACCC claims that the draft letter contains ‘misinformation’, including that Google will be required to charge for use of its free services and share additional user data with businesses. The draft code, the ACCC claims, ‘will allow Australian news businesses to negotiate for fair payment for their journalists’ work' that is included on Google services’ which will ‘address a significant bargaining power imbalance between Australian news media businesses and Google and Facebook.’
